It is around this time of year where we start to feel slightly run down and the winter cold season is in full swing. Our bodies start to feel a little over worked and undervalued and our usual habits may consist of us running to the medicine cupboard and taking anything we can get our hands on. However, as a nutritionist I try and stear clear of the medicines and use herbs and spices instead which are shown to have hugely anti-inflammatory effects. Below is my recipe for anti-inflammatory tea which I recommend you keep topping up and sipping throughout the day.
1 inch fresh ginger
1 inch fresh turmeric
1 cinnamon stick
Generous sprinkling of fennel seeds
1 star anise
1 licorice root (optional as this is a bit more tricky to get hold of)
1. Chop the ginger and turmeric into small cubes.
2. Add them to the pan with the water, cinnamon, fennel seeds, star anise, licorice and honey. Leave to simmer on a low to medium heat for 5-8 minutes.
3. Strain into a mug and enjoy.
Tip: I recommend keeping the base of the tea as you can keep topping it up throughout the day.
